As per a new support page, Google is shutting down Duplex on the Web by this year’s end – a service that lets people make online ticket reservations.
While Google didn’t specifically mention the reason behind it’s shutdown, it said to focus more on improving the Duplex voice technology instead.
Shutting Down Duplex for the Web
Adding to the list of projects Google’s killing every year, Duplex for the Web will be shelved by this year’s end. This was noted in a new support page spotted by TechCrunch, where Google mentioned shutting down the project. Talking on this to TechCrunch, a Google spokesperson said;
“As we continue to improve the Duplex experience, we’re responding to the feedback we’ve heard from users and developers about how to make it even better.”
While the company didn’t mention any specific reason yet, it’s assumed to be due to it’s AI training cost for parsing websites! As TechCrunch noted, Google used a special user agent for training the Duplex for the Web, which makes it crawl websites multiple times a day.
This may have become infeasible to Google over time. And with most website admins blocking such crawlers from indexing their content, Duplex for the Web goes useless. Well, Google said it’ll “focus on making AI advancements to the Duplex voice technology that helps people most every day”.
Well, since we have time until the end of this month, you may use Duplex for the Web through your inbuilt Google Assistant on any Android device. Powered by AI, the service can book tickets, check for discounted deals on certain portals, and even check in your flights.
Further, if you have saved your credit card details to Google, Duplex for the Web can look up for their existence against any online data breaches.
