Google has released the August security update for the Pixel Watch this week, fixing known vulnerabilities on WearOS.
Google has also made a dedicated security bulletin website for WearOS updates, listing the bugs’ type, severity and the AOSP versions they affect. If you’re a Pixel Watch user and didn’t receive the update already, you can manually pull it from Settings.
August Update for Pixel Watch
Pixel Watch, the smartwatch brand from Google, is one of the best WearOS running watches today, with new features and strict security standards. But, Google has long been limiting its capability for the sake of Samsung’s Galaxy Watches, with it having an exclusive partnership.
In this pursuit, Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Watch 6 Series comes with the latest WearOS 4, while the native Pixel Watch is still kept running on WearOS 3.5, despite the August update. Released alongside the Pixel’s monthly security update, the WearOS August 2023 security patch fixes several known issues.
Amongst the eight high-severity vulnerabilities, six are related to the system and two to the platform and framework. One among them is a severe exploit in the framework that could allow for “local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed“.
And for Pixel phones, Google is now maintaining a monthly security bulletin for the WearOS too. This website mentions the patch notes specifically for Wear OS, including their type, severity, and the AOSP versions they affect.
All these make up the essential update to your Pixel Watch, so it’s advised to download it. If you didn’t receive the update, you can manually check in Settings > System > System Updates to find and install it. The August 2023 security update for WearOS is logged as RWDC.230805.00.
