Pixel 8 users on Android 14 reported seeing Ultra HDR support on Google Messages, which enhances an image’s details if they’re shared through RCS-enabled chats.
Ultra HDR mode will darken shadows and brighten the important elements of an image, highlighting the essential details. This support is available on the Google Photos app and will now be rolling out to Google Messages.
Ultra HDR Images in Google Messages
One of the many features Google cooked into it’s latest Android 14 OS is the Ultra HDR image sharing support, which enhances the image’s key details smartly.
While it should be coming to most Android 14-running smartphone, The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro have gotten it first, as some users reported seeing Ultra HDR support in RCS-enabled chats of their Google Messages app. When enabled, Ultra HDR will darken the shadows of an image and brighten various elements of the photo, creating a more vibrant captured moment.
Further, Google Messages doesn’t seem to compress images sent in Ultra HDR mode, where they’re usually stripped of clarity and metadata. Google Photos had this feature back in September, even before the launch of Android 14, and it is now rolling out to Google Messages.
This aside, Google is also revamping the UI of it’s Messaging app, with the profile section and chat bar repositioned to gain more focus this time. Also, the emoji button is set to the far left side of the chat bar, while the voice messaging feature may have it’s dedicated button soon.
