A reliable tipster noted that Google Messages is working on a Selfie GIFs feature, that lets users record a 4-second video and automatically convert it into a GIF.

Though Selfie GIFs make conversations more interesting, there’s no timeline for when Google would launch this. If coming, users can activate it by long pressing the camera icon right beside the text field and start recording after a 3-second countdown.

After pushing RCS messaging into the mainstream, Google is now prioritizing new features for it’s native Messages app, the latest being Selfie GIFs. Tipster AssembleDebug found this feature in the most recent version of Google Messages by enabling a code flag.

The feature is cooked into the Camera option beside the text field, where long pressing the icon will bring up a new UI with a circular camera frame. Tapping the capture button, you can record a 4-second video from your front or back cameras and send it to the recipient.

Google Messages converts the recorded video into a GIF automatically before sending it out. It also gives a Restart button to try recording again if you messed up the first time. There’s no timeline on when this feature would see light but we hope to see it soon.
