Google is reportedly working on emoji reactions in Gmail, similar to that on Microsoft Outlook. Code references in Gmail iOS and Android apps refer to this feature as coming soon.
As we wait for an official announcement or rollout, Google may test this feature with limited beta testers initially and later offer it to everyone. When available, users can access emojis right in the email screen or from the three-dot menu.
Emoji Reactions in Gmail
To make your email interactions more interesting, Google is adding emojis to the Gmail mobile clients, as spotted by a couple of researchers this month. Initially reported by The Tape Drive, the Gmail iOS app is noted to have code relating to emoji reactions – similar to what we have on Outlook.
This finding was later supported by similar code leaks in the Gmail Android app by a reliable Google leaker, AssembleDebug, this week. While details regarding this feature are still developing, some code lines state the feature is “coming soon” and that “you’re among the first Gmail users to get an emoji reaction” – making it available only for a few users when released.
When available, this feature could be accessed directly from the email screen or the three-dot overflow menu, although the latter option is currently disabled. While it’s an exciting addition, limitations include the ability to use only a few emojis in encrypted messages, large groups, or if you’ve been bcc’d.
Further, there could be a limit of 20 emoji reactions per single email, while some emails can have a limit of 50 unique responses. While Google is yet to confirm this officially, a Google spokesperson replied to The Verge’s request for clarification and returned “stay tuned” with the following emojis: “😉,✋📻.” Thus, they’re likely to appear soon.
