Google is reportedly reviving it’s AR smart glasses project, Project Iris, as per code snippets found in the latest Google app by 9to5Google.
The team found references to the keyword iris and relevant gestures that can be made through the device. Some include calling friends, setting timers and awakening the Google assistant without the hot word. Google is yet to confirm this development.
Reinventing Google’s AR Smart Glasses
While we talk regularly about Google killing most of it’s products and services for being average or useless, the company is also reviving more relevant projects.
As noted by 9to5Google, a dig-up into the latest Google app reveals code strings mentioning “iris” – Google’s AR smart glasses project, which it ignored after a couple of editions. While there’s no official confirmation that Google is reworking it, this new finding may suggest that the company is pursuing the smart glasses again.
Well, Google may also have been triggered by the launch of Meta’s and Amazon’s smart glasses recently, updated with modern features that may resurrect the community’s interest in smart glasses.
The leaked code strings about Google’s Iris glasses also refer to gestures you can use to activate Google Assistant and other actions like calling friends or setting timers.
<string name=”assistant_bisto_oobe_iris_finish_setup_description_no_hotword”>Just touch & hold the right temple to talk to your Assistant.</string>
More details on this device are yet to be known. Earlier reports suggested that Google has given up on it’s AR smart glasses after layoffs, reshuffles and the departure of Google’s chief of augmented and virtual reality. It was also reported that Google was shifting it’s focus to creating a “micro XR” platform, which would be licensed to manufacturers for running smart glasses, similar to it’s mobile OS.
As we wait to see how committed Google is to reviving this project, it’s happy to learn that the company hasn’t forgotten it, after all.
