In a surprising move, Google has begun emailing it’s Google One subscribers, informing them that the company will be discontinuing it’s VPN service later this year. For those who are unaware, Google introduced a VPN service for it’s Google One subscribers back in 2020, which was included in the 2TB storage plan. However, in March 2023, Google expanded it’s VPN service to include all Google One subscribers.
Since it’s launch, the company has made numerous improvements to it’s VPN service and expanded it’s availability to many global markets. Introducing it’s own VPN service with unlimited usage was a significant step for Google to enhance browsing safety. Now, the question arises: why is Google discontinuing it’s VPN service? For those who are unfamiliar with this, this is not the first case, as Google has discontinued many of it’s apps in the past. The reason for discontinuing it’s VPN service may be similar to that of it’s other apps. According to the search giant, there hasn’t been significant usage of this VPN service, prompting the decision to discontinue it.
The company stated, “We are discontinuing the VPN feature as we found that people simply weren’t using it”. The company said in a statement to 9to5google that they will now allow their team to “refocus” and “support more in-demand features with Google One”. The company did not disclose the exact date when the VPN service will be discontinued. However, the email sent by Google to it’s Google One subscribers mentioned that the VPN will be discontinued later this year.
One positive aspect is that the company will continue it’s Pixel VPN, which was introduced with the Pixel 7 series. Later, the Pixel VPN was extended to the Pixel 8 series and it will soon be available for older Pixel devices via a software update. Regular users of Google One VPN will surely miss it once it is gone, as it is available for all devices including Windows and Macs. Pixel VPN is currently only available for Pixel devices, and users with other devices cannot utilize it as of now.
