Several Google Messages users reported the inability to send RCS messages on their rooted Android devices, despite the device showing as connected to RCS mode.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that the company is testing the blocking of RCS messaging on rooted Android devices, to avoid spam and abuse on Google Messages. Instead, Google suggests the affected users to try SMS & MMS messaging.

No RCS Messaging on Rooted Android Devices

For years, Google pushed every OEM to support it’s new RCS messaging as the new standard for texting, positioning it as a viable solution for interoperability and flexibility. While it did reach the heights Google wished for, the company is now pulling it from rooted Android devices!

As noted by several people on the Google Messages support page, XDA forums, and Reddit, RCS messaging on rooted Android devices isn’t working anymore. Messages sent through RCS mode would vanish after hitting the send button, a user reported, forcing them to switch to normal SMS mode.

Responding to The Verge, Google communications manager Ivy Hunt admitted the company is blocking RCS messaging on rooted Android devices, as they’re “ensuring that message-issuing/receiving devices are following the operating measures defined by the RCS standard” to prevent spam and abuse on Google Messages.

Furthermore, Hunt suggested that “users that cannot use RCS still have access to SMS & MMS messaging“. Google has a history of blocking devices that don’t follow it’s general guidelines, just as how it barred rooted devices from running Google Pay/Wallet earlier.

While understandable, Google typically warns users that the device is unsupported, which it didn’t do in the current RCS issue, triggering criticism.
