Google Expands its ‘Search Generative Experience’ to Teens

After receiving positive feedback from the initial test, Google is expanding it’s Search Generative Experience(SGE) to teens aged 13 to 17 to let them search for things in a conversation style.

Google’s SGE is powered by the company’s native generative AI, which makes the search results in Google Search in a ChatGPT-like style, making it easier to understand and follow up with more queries. This has been in testing for a while with people aged 18 and now expanding to teens with caution.

Google Search in a More Interesting Way

Riding on the craze of generative AI, Google made Bard to counter ChatGPT. While it’s growing well with several features, Google is also adding the touch of generative AI to it’s most important product – Search. Calling it the Search Generative Experience, Google has been testing it with interested people for a while now.

And since it received positive feedback from this test, the company is allowing teenagers(aged between 13 and 17) to try the new SGE too. Interested users should enable this from the Search Labs and can ask queries in Search, similar to receiving results in ChatGPT or Bard.

Google says it found more users are interested in a conversation-like Search rather than the current traditional one, so it’s expanding it’s SGE to more people. This experience is found to be helpful since the answers are more understandable while also allowing users to continue their search with follow-up questions.

While it’s a needed addition, Google says it’s introducing several guardrails to safeguard the teenagers’ experience with the new SGE. Working with the experts, Google decided to educate teens before letting them access the SGE.

Wherever a teen signs for this experience, Google sends them a link with the literacy guide to explain how the generative AI works, along with it’s capabilities and limitations. Also, there’s a new “About this result” tag for every result incurred to help people give more information about how it’s generated and the source.
