Less than a decade after it’s public launch, Google Domains is shutting down the business.
While it’s yet to announce this formally, Squarespace, another domain and web hosting company, told of acquiring Google Domains by the end of this year, this transition would send about 10 million domains from Google’s business to Squarespace, including the Workspace ones.
Shutting Down Google Domains Business
Google Domains is one of the many services that Google offers today, letting general users buy domains of their like and host websites. While it’s a critical internet aspect, Google hasn’t succeeded like others. GoDaddy, Namecheap, Hostinger etc., are much more reliable and flexible, while Google Domains seemed like an internal business.
As it continues to fall, Squarespace, a domains and web hosting company, announced acquiring Google Domains business today! This means Google Domains will be shutting down soon, as the acquisition deal is set to close by this year’s end. Talking about this move, Squarespace founder and CEO Anthony Casalena said;
“We are exceptionally proud to be chosen to serve the customers of the Google Domains business.”
While Google is yet to make a formal announcement on this closure, Squarespace said it’d be taking over 10 million domains of Google Domains and promises a smooth transition in the coming months. On Google’s part, it continues to honour the renewal prices for at least 12 months after this deal, while Squarespace plans to offer incentives for retaining the customers.
Also, Squarespace promises to support Google Workspace customers, becoming the “exclusive domains provider for any customer purchasing a domain along with their Workspace subscription from Google directly for a minimum of three years“.
