Google Chrome from v117 will start explaining to users why it removed an extension – if they see it missing from their list.
Users can check for this in the Privacy tab under Safety Check, where Chrome mentions the reasons why – possibly that the extension is spreading malware, violating Chrome Web Store policies or unpublished by the developer.
Chrome Extension Removal Notification
Browsing on Google Chrome, have you ever wondered where a web extension has suddenly gone? Well, to let you know, Google Chrome is working on a notification feature in v117. The update is scheduled to release sometime in September and it’ll explain to you why a specific browser extension was removed from your catalogue.
As noted by Engadget, Google is working on a new notification system to let Chrome users know why a specific extension was removed from their library. The reasons could be either – the concerned developer has unpublished the extension, or it’s identified as malware or violating some Chrome Web Store policies.
Whatever the reason, you can find it by going to Settings > Privacy and Security > Safety Check, where it tells you how many extensions were removed from the store and you’ll also have the option to review it in more detail. Well, this feature will only inform you about the currently installed extensions in your library, not necessarily the changes on Chrome Web Store.
Also, you won’t receive a notification if Google has given a developer time to fix or appeal a possible violation. So it’s either a confirmed action or nothing. Google already has several tools to tackle malicious extensions on it’s Store and would remove such upon detection.
