A fresh update to Google Chat puts the communication platform on par with Slack and Microsoft Teams, with features like Huddles, AI chatbot and more.
Further, the UI has also been revamped to align with Google’s Material You design and the Spaces participants limit is increased to 500,000 users. All these updates are rolling to Google Chat on the web and mobile clients this week.
Google Chat New Features
Google is updating almost every app in it’s ecosystem to suit modern user needs, with the latest service receiving such an update being Google Chat.
In a blog post penned today, the Google Chat team said the web platform and mobile clients received a new UI design and productivity tools, making the app almost as suitable as Slack or Microsoft Teams for enterprise communications.
Starting with the UI, the fresh makeover creates a unified conversation list that combines direct messages and spaces and a chronological home view. With an updated colour palette, Google Chat also gains typography and visual storytelling to suit Google’s Material You design.
The team also says the home view will be more dynamic next year, prioritising the messages based on your communication patterns. Furthermore, the Google Chat app is adding Huddles – similar to Slack, that lets users quickly hop on a call with colleagues and share their screen directly without jumping between chats and meetings.
This aside, Google is expanding the Spaces participants limit to 500,000 users, 10x the previous 50,000-member limit. And finally, the company brought Duet AI to Google Chat after adding the same for Workspace users earlier this month.
Duet AI can help Google Chat users to get assistance with “complex queries”, aside from helping them to summarise documents and recap missed conversations.
