Google is set to start manufacturing Chromebooks in India through a strategic collaboration with HP. This significant announcement was made by Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, on the popular social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
India has been garnering attention recently for various commendable reasons. This South Asian nation has promoted it’s indigenous tech development sector by offering cheaper labour than it’s neighbouring China and enticing government incentives. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has also taken proactive steps by launching a $2 billion policy to attract international tech giants to establish manufacturing units within India.

Following the footsteps of Apple, which initiated the manufacturing of iPhones in India, numerous other tech companies have also chosen to set up their production facilities in collaboration with local industries. In his X announcement, Sundar Pichai underscored that Google’s decision to manufacture Chromebooks in India is rooted in the company’s commitment to providing affordable hardware solutions to Indian students. Additionally, this move is poised to significantly reduce production costs due to the availability of cost-effective labour and government incentives for tech raw materials imports.
Notably, Google has partnered with Hewlett-Packard(HP) to undertake this venture. The “Made in India” Chromebooks will be manufactured at Hewlett Packard’s production facility in India, ensuring a streamlined production process. With it’s prior experience developing Chromebooks for European and American users, HP brings a wealth of expertise to this endeavour.
