How to Disable Doze for an App on the Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge

For those who need notifications to come in from a particular application, let me show you how to disable doze for apps on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

Doze can be great if you want to save battery life while your device is off and not being used. Some really dislike it because the feature can prevent some applications from functioning the way they are used to. I’ve heard people blame Doze time and time again for missing out on notifications and I can understand why that can be aggravating. Thankfully though, there’s an easy way to disable Doze on the Galaxy S7 for any number of applications installed on your device.

It’s not a singular on/off switch for disabling Doze entirely, but it could be if you go through and disable it for all apps.

Instead, it’s a way for the user to fine-tune exactly which applications are affected by Doze itself. For example, if you really need an application to run in the background for work, then you could go in and disable Doze for that specific app. This can be done to any number of applications on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. From games and social apps, to productivity and utility apps, if you feel Doze is interfering with how an application runs on your device then it might be a good idea to try this step.

Just be aware that disabling Doze for an app on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge can increase overall battery usage. The amount of extra battery usage will depend entirely on what the application does, but it’s just something that you should be aware of.

Galaxy S7 Disable Doze

  1. Launch the Settings Application
  2. Scroll Down and Tap on the ‘Battery’ Option
  3. Tap on the ‘More’ Button at the Top Right
  4. Tap on the ‘Optimize Battery Usage’ Option
  5. Tap the Drop Down Menu and Select the ‘All Apps’ Option
  6. Locate the App You Want Doze to Ignore and Toggle it Off

Explanation

This is another one of the features that are buried within the Settings menus so to start we’re going to need to launch the Settings application. From here, scroll down a little and then tap on the Battery option and then look at the top right of the screen. You should see a button that is labeled More and you’re going to need to tap that. This will expand a little drop down menu where you’ll see two options. We want to tap on the second option here that says Optimize Battery Usage.

This screen, by default, will list all of the applications that are ignoring Doze mode. The number of apps and services here will depend on where you got your device from. As you can see in the video above, I have the Verizon Wireless Galaxy S7 so I have some additional Verizon apps that are ignoring Doze. If you have the AT&T model (or any other variant), then you’ll see a different set of apps and services here. We want to tap on the Apps Not Optimized drop down menu though and then tap on the All Apps option.

The drop down menu so we can show all of the applications

After tapping on the All Apps option, we’ll get a list of every application and service that is installed on your Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge. Every application or service listed here that is toggled on means that Android’s Doze mode is enabled for it. So, for example, if you’re having trouble getting your emails from Gmail because of Doze, then you can go into here and toggle the feature off for that application. You can do this for any number of applications and services listed here.

Now, I do want to make a note that you should still be getting notifications from applications that use Google’s GMS (when the device is in Doze mode). Granted, you could miss out on notifications from mobile games because these are generally not critical notifications. If you feel you want those notifications from a game, then go here in and disable Doze for that game. This is just one of those things that you will have to experiment with.

If you have disabled Doze mode for a particular application here, and you are still missing out on notifications then it’s not the fault of Android’s Doze mode. This could be the result of a power saving mode kicking in, from you not having connection to the internet, or possibly from the application itself. There are a number of reasons why a notification won’t come through properly. I see a lot of people blaming Doze because it’s a new feature and they just started having this issue. But if you disable Doze on the Galaxy s7 for the app (as described above), then it isn’t the fault of Doze if you are still not getting your notifications.
