AST SpaceMobile, the telecom company that aims to provide broadband from space, has successfully tested the first-ever 5G connection between a Galaxy S22 and a satellite in space.
This achievement was performed from a dead wireless zone in Hawaii, with the phone linked to it’s BlueWalker satellite in space, to call a Vodafone engineer in Madrid. Also, the connection has successfully established a 5G internet connection with 14Mbps speed.
Calls and Internet From Space
A US-based telecom company called AST SpaceMobile has succeeded in setting up a 5G link from it’s satellite to a regular phone on Earth this month. The handset is an unmodified Samsung Galaxy S22, which can receive 5G voice and data connections from AST’s BlueWalker 3 satellite situated within Earth’s lower orbit.
The process has AT&T involved, too, in sharing it’s spectrum for a successful connection. Achieving this feat on September 8, 2023, the engineers could do a satellite call from the Galaxy S22 in Hana, Hawaii, a wireless dead zone, to a Vodafone engineer in Madrid. Doing so, AST SpaceMobile said,
“We are more confident than ever that space-based cellular broadband can help transform internet connectivity across the globe by filling in gaps and connecting the unconnected.”
The company also established a space-based broadband connection with the smartphone at a download rate of 14Mbps. Though it’s not a speedy connection, it’s still a significant achievement considering it’s from space and broke the company’s previous record of 10Mbps.
