Ubisoft released the trailer for the next installment in the highly popular Far Cry franchise this week. In the trailer for ‘Far Cry 6’, we are introduced to the main villain, a dictator named Antón Castillo, who holds control over an island called Yara. The character is portrayed by actor Giancarlo Esposito, known best for his portrayal of Gus Fring in the hit TV show Breaking Bad and its spin off Better Call Saul.
Far Cry 6 will be a follow up to 2018’s Far Cry 5 and its 2019 narrative sequel Far Cry New Dawn. The game is set to be released on February 18, 2021 on all the major platforms including Windows, Xbox One/Series X, PlayStation 4/5 and Google Stadia.
Here’s the trailer, in case you haven’t seen it yet.
The Storyline
The Antagonist
Far Cry 6 will be set on a fictional Island called Yara in the Caribbean. The main antagonist, whom we are introduced to, is the “El Presidente” of the Island Nation, Antón Castillo. In the trailer we can see the fascist dictator instructing his teenage son, Diego, on the dark nature of power.
A significant part of the entire Far Cry franchise, much like the James Bond franchise, has always been its interesting portrayal of villains. Giancarlo Esposito, the actor portraying the villain in Far Cry 6 was asked by Variety to describe his character in this game, to which he replied the following:
“He’s in the middle of, unfortunately, a revolution. He’s trying to empower the people to understand that they need strong leadership now.”
The Protagonist
The gamer will have control of a character named Dani Rojas. Dani is an inhabitant of Yara, and is currently a guerrilla soldier fighting to overthrow the fascist dictator Antón Castillo.
The protagonist has been given a purposely gender ambiguous name, ‘Dani’. The gamer will have the option to choose Dani’s gender at the beginning of the game. This is a feature that was first introduced in Far Cry 5.
The Plot & Setting
The developers have said that Far Cry 6 will have the largest map of any Far Cry game so far. So that in itself is something to get excited about. The setting for the game is a tropical paradise that is currently raging in a revolution. The game’s narrative director, Navid Khavari, says that the team drew inspiration from the Island nation of Cuba. He says that they spent over a month in the island, trying to imagine what a modern guerrilla revolution would look like.
Pre-Order
Like we’ve stated above, the game is releasing in all major platforms on February 18, 2021. Interested gamers have the option to pre-order the game right away. Ubisoft has listed three different editions for pre-order:
- Gold Edition: Will include the Game and the season pass.
- Ultimate Edition: Will include the Game, the season pass and the Ultimate pack (w. Jungle Edition pack, Croc Hunter pack & the Vice pack).
- Collector’s Edition: Will include the Game, the season pass, the Ultimate pack, and several in-game features like a flamethrower weapon as well as various accessories like an art book, stickers, a key ring etc.
