Gallery Systems, a software service provider for several museums worldwide, has disclosed a cyberattack on it’s infrastructure, leading to some of it’s systems being encrypted.
As it’s investigating to find more details, museums relying on Gallery Systems software are currently down, including the emuseum.com. In a letter to it’s customers, Gallery Systems said it would restore the data with the last available backup.
Digital Museums Down After a Cyberattack
Besides showcasing their art collections physically, several museums also maintain a digital version of all their items through dedicated websites. One such prominent website maker – or an online museum software provider, is Gallery Systems, which serves over 800 museums today.
Merged with Artsystems back in April 2022, Gallery Systems’ client portfolio includes the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, the Barnes Foundation, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
In a customer notification shared with BleepingComputer, Gallery Systems disclosed a ransomware attack on it’s infrastructure on December 28th, forcing the company to take systems offline to prevent further spreading of encrypting malware.
“We have been working around the clock to restore access to the software, and we sincerely appreciate your patience during this time. We will be restoring your data with the last available backup.”
One of the Gallery Systems major products – emuseum.com is down due to this hack – blacking out all the organizations relying on this domain. This is used by several museums and colleges for creating searchable online collections and exhibitions.
