In a conversation with the Israel Prime Minister, Elon Musk reportedly said that X could be put behind a paywall to counter the bots.
While there’s no timeline on when this could happen, Elon Musk sees commercialising the platform access as the only way to reduce bots, as it’d increase the cost of maintaining them. Also, Musk has reiterated his stance on anti-Semitism and assured doing everything to stop hate on X.
Commercialising to Counter Bots
X, one of the major social media platforms where active political conversations happen, is also the place for bots to propagate fake news. As such accounts continue to grow and spread misinformation, X’s head, Elon Musk, is planning to counter them by charging access to the platform!
He stated this idea in a conversation with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where having “a small monthly payment for use of the system” can reduce bots on the X. This is because it only takes a “fraction of a penny” to make a bot, but “if somebody even has to pay a few dollars or something, some minor amount, the effective cost to bots is very high”.
Assuming that it would eventually demotivate people to make bots, Musk and his company X are always clear about commercialising the platform activities for good. Since the takeover, Musk introduced a revamped Twitter Blue subscription called X Premium that incentivizes users to pay a monthly fee.
As such, the premium subscription also requires identity verification, Musk is optimistic about verifying more and more users for better transparency. While it’s a reliable plan to charge users, this could also drive away some users, denting advertising revenue.
Yet, X isn’t backing off, as Elon Musk says they’re also exploring a cheaper subscription plan to suit the budget users. “We’re going to come up with a lower tier pricing. So we want it to be just a small amount of money“, he said.
