Observing that many users are exploiting it’s unlimited Advanced plans for shady activities, Dropbox decided to meter it’s offerings at 15TB per plan.
While the current users will be left consuming the unlimited space until a notification arrives, new users will be capped at 15TB of shared storage per plan and if they need more, Dropbox offers add-on storage packs for $10 a TB.
Triggered by Illegally Activities
Though intended for cloud storage and organised file sharing, Dropbox is often used by threat actors for their malicious activities, too. While some include sharing or leaking stolen proprietary data, some use the platform for sharing copyrighted material.
But taking this to another level, some users have been found using Dropbox for running crypto mining purposes, as some coins like Chia use proof of storage rather than proof of work or stake contributions and in some worst cases, Dropbox found some users are reselling their unlimited plans to others!
Thus, citing all such shady activity, Dropbox said it’s cutting down on unlimited storage offerings. Starting November 1st(September 18th for new users), Dropbox will cap it’s current Unlimited Advanced Plan at 15TB for three licenses. Additional licenses should be brought at 5TB per licence.
Well, users will be notified about this change at least 30 days before it’s implemented and they can use their unlimited quota until then, says Dropbox. New users will be capped at 15TB per plan, with additional licences at 5TB per licence nd if you need more storage, you can buy add-on packs of 1TB each for $10 a month or $8 a TB if billed annually.
Despite this, all the new Advanced plans will be capped at 1000TB, ultimately. Dropbox said over 99% of their Unlimited Advanced Storage users consume less than 35TB per month, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
