To stand against the growing competition, Disney is hiking it’s high-end subscription cost to $13.99 a month, up from $10.99 a month in December last year.
Following this suite, Disney’s subsidiary Hulu is also hiking the price of it’s Premium subscription to $17.99 a month, up by $3. Well, a bundle of these subscriptions makes a better deal, costing just $19.99 a month. Disney+ CEO has also discussed password crackdown plans, which may kick in sometime next year.
Disney+ Subscription Hike
Though having deep pockets and a vast content library, Disney suffers from competition in the OTT space. The platform’s Disney+ wing is already running it’s premium tier at $10.99 a month, which is above-fairly priced compared to rivals.
Now, it’s hiking this tier by $3 to $13.99 a month, starting October 12th. This price increase was earlier touted by Disney+ CEO Bob Iger, who said the hike is imminent. While it’s understandable, a price hike of $3 each, twice in less than a year is slightly triggering.
Following this suite, Disney’s sister platform Hulu is also increasing the price of it’s Premium tier by $3 to $17.99 a month. But a duo of these two subscriptions(Disney+ and Hulu) will cost just $19.99 monthly, making it a better deal.
This aside, Disney also said the $8 ad-supported tier launched in the US last year is coming to Europe and Canada and lastly, Disney+ CEO Bob Iger also talked about the company’s plan of restricting password sharing, as they’re “actively exploring ways to address account sharing and the best options for paying subscribers to share their accounts with friends and family”.
Iger says these plans will kick in sometime in 2024 and hopefully gives the company the same success as Netflix had through it’s recent password crackdown plans and move.
