Despite Compliance, US Officials are Still Trying to Sell TikTok's US Wing

Despite TikTok addressing the security issues raised by everyone, some US officials are reportedly planning to sell it’s US wing to a local body for good.

This was revealed by a source from the US Committee on Foreign Investment, which has the nation’s security officials as it’s members. Responding to this post, a TikTok representative expressed disbelief, as they’re being forced to sell off regardless of compliance.

Disbelieving TikTok on Security Concerns

TikTok has long been in turmoil over data security issues, where the platform was accused by many governments and security researchers of leaking sensitive user data and potentially sharing it with the Chinese government in critical times.

Though the company has tuned itself to suit almost everyone’s needs, the US isn’t satisfiedand still trying to sell it’s US division to a local body for good. This comes from The Wall Street Journal, which reported based on a source from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US.

It noted that some US officials are making plans to force ByteDance (owner of TikTok) to sell it’s US division to an ally. This is despite the video company obliging to all the concerns raised by the US officials.

Responding to this report, a TikTok representative named Brooke Oberwetter said

“We believe those concerns can be fully resolved, and CFIUS is currently considering a comprehensive solution that addresses key concerns around corporate governance, content recommendation and moderation, and data security and access.”

Well, just earlier this month, ByteDance admitted that two of it’s employees had accessed the data of US journalists and others in an internal review – triggering even more concerns. Though it’s responsible for disclosing and addressing them in time, the US government isn’t calming down.
