ChatGPT Popularity Declined, User Traffic Falls by 10%

After a meteoric rise late last year, ChatGPT saw it’s first-ever declined user traffic in June this year.

The web and iOS app traffic to the AI chatbot fell by 9.7% in June compared to a month earlier. This decline is attributed to the rise of rival AI chatbots, students being on summer break and companies restricting the use of ChatGPT assistance in their work.

Fall of ChatGPT

OpenAI’s ChatGPT created a wave of AI rush late last year – when the AI chatbot launched and gained 100 million followers in just two months! This triggered the tech giants to create similar chatbots and to be part of the exciting AI race.

This resulted in products from rival competitors taking a part of ChatGPT’s popularity, as the latter saw a decline in user growth for the first time since it’s inception. As per Similarweb statistics, the user traffic to ChatGPT’s website and iOS app has fallen 9.7% in June compared to the previous month.

This aligns with the report from Sensor Tower, which noted a fall in downloads of ChatGPT’s iOS client in June. Apart from the competition from rivals, ChatGPT’s fall is also attributed to the summer break students are on, as they use the chatbot heavily for academic work.

Further, governments and companies worldwide are prohibiting the use of ChatGPT(and other similar services) for internal office work, which has also affected ChatGPT’s growth. SimilarWeb also stated that user engagement of ChatGPT has also fallen by 8.5% in May 2023.

Though this decline seems concerning, OpenAI may feel good about it too. The company’s CEO has earlier said the operating costs of the ChatGPT public version are eye-watering, so the free users losing interest in the AI chatbot is fairly acceptable.
