What is Download Mode and what is it used for?

Download mode is one of those features that make Android great. While it isn’t accessible to regular users, users who want more control over their devices can use it to flash different types of files into their phone. These include installing custom Recovery, custom ROMs and other files like the factory firmware for the phone.

This is possible because a device in this mode will use external sources in place of the stock bootloader (the default mode).

Besides this, Download Mode is also useful for checking helpful information about the phone, like the model details, FRP status and the system data.
