Responding to a customer, Asus technical team has said that unlocking the bootloader isn’t possible for the Zenfone 9 and later devices, making all the future Asus handsets restricted of rooting freedom.
While it’s hard to digest, there could be a discrepancy in this communication, as an Asus developer says they aren’t aware of this move. The company itself hasn’t officially announced this decision yet. So we are waiting to hear more details on this.
Blocking Rooting on Asus Smartphones
Asus, the Taiwanese company, is a reliable maker of electronics in various categories, with it’s primary market being the PC segment. While thriving there, Asus maintains a flagship-only smartphone lineup in some countries, with a Zenfone branding.
Wherever it’s available, Asus offers a range of tools to let users tinker with their devices as desired and rooting their smartphones is one among them. Though it involves the risk of bricking your phone, rooting your device unlocks a world of possibilities.
But, the company is reportedly blocking these efforts on the Zenfone 9 and later devices, as noted by a customer. In an email reply to his query, the Asus technical support team conveys that unlocking the bootloader on ZenFones is no longer possible and won’t be possible in the future!
While the customer’s query was about unlocking the Zenfone 9, the team affirms that all future Asus smartphones will lack rooting abilities! While there’s no official confirmation from the company yet, Asus said it’d update the native rooting tool to support Zenfone 10 and make it available by the third quarter of this year. However, the above-mentioned email from ASUS support suggests that might not happen.
Well, a Reddit user showed a scope of discrepancy in this communication, as the company’s developer liaison on it’s Telegram channel does not know of any such development. “According to them, the unlock tool server is in maintenance and will resume in Q3”, the person noted.
