Apple is forcing 121 employees working in San Diego on Siri’s AI capabilities to relocate to the Austin campus or quit their roles!
This was confirmed by an Apple spokesperson to Bloomberg, which reported that the San Diego team would be relocated to the Austin campus with a relocation stipend or terminated with severance pay and health insurance.
Relocating For Integrated Work
Apple US reportedly asks 121 people working at it’s San Diego campus to move to Austin and collaborate with their peers on the same project. The San Diego team called the Data Operations Annotations, is tasked to improve Siri with voice service queries.
Initially, this group consisted of contractors who listened to Siri queries, but were eventually replaced by full-time employees focused on using Siri in multiple languages, viz English, Hebrew, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic and French.
Employees at the San Diego office said they were earlier informed of moving to another office in the same city but this fresh move asked them to move to a new state altogether.
Apple’s top deputy to the AI chief, John Giannandrea confirmed this relocation news to Bloomberg, where another spokesperson said the San Diego team will be moved to Austin, where most teams are already located. Furthermore, “Everyone currently employed will have the opportunity to continue their role with Apple in Austin”.
But, some employees have doubted this possibility, as most have no engineering backgrounds. Yet, Apple said they could apply for other jobs but didn’t provide any more details. Anyhow, People willing to relocate should decide by the end of February, while those who don’t will be terminated by April 16.
Relocating employees will get a $7,000 stipend if they relocate by the end of June and those who don’t – will be terminated by offering a severance pay, based on the length of their service, plus six months of health insurance.
