At it’s Wonderlust event, Apple unveiled it’s latest high-end iPhones: the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. These new iPhones succeeded last year’s 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max and Apple has claimed that they are currently the most powerful smartphones available.
There are several notable improvements in these iPhones compared to their predecessors. Both devices are constructed from titanium, making them the most durable smartphones on the market. Additionally, there is a new action button on the side rails, which replaces the alert slider found in previous generations of iPhones. Both devices are equipped with the new A17 Bionic chip and a USB Type C port for charging and data transfer. You can find detailed specifications for these devices below.
Specifications for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max:
These two devices are nearly identical, with the only differences being screen size, battery capacity and price. The 15 Pro features a 6.1-inch display, while the 15 Pro Max boasts a 6.7-inch display. Both Pro models sport Super Retina XDR displays with ProMotion, supporting both the always-on display and the new Standby mode in iOS 17. The display closely resembles last year’s 14 Pro device and includes the same dynamic island that houses the front camera and Face ID sensors. The dynamic island is now more versatile, supporting more apps and providing useful information and notification alerts.
Under the hood, Apple has incorporated it’s own A17 Bionic chip, which is the first chip manufactured using 3nm fabrication. Apple claims it to be the most powerful processor in a smartphone currently available, capable of handling heavy games effortlessly. The A17 Bionic chip in the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max can rival the performance of most PCs and now includes a redesigned GPU for a seamless gaming experience.
One significant change in this year’s Pro models is the inclusion of a USB Type C port at the bottom for charging, replacing the Lightning port. USB Type C is now the industry standard for charging, and Apple has finally bid farewell to the Lightning port, which the company had been using on all iPhones since 2012. This year, all iPhones come with a USB Type C port for charging and data transfer. Moreover, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are the only devices to offer a 10Gbps transfer speed, making the transfer of videos and photos of any size significantly faster than other devices.
One of the most highlighted features of iPhones, aside from their performance, is their cameras. Apple has spared no effort in making the cameras in this year’s Pro devices the best in any smartphone. Like previous Pro models, the iPhone 15 Pro models feature a triple rear camera system housed in a similar camera module as last year.
The triple rear camera system includes a 48-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization, paired with a 12-megapixel f/2.8 aperture periscope telephoto lens and a 12-megapixel f/2.2 aperture ultrawide sensor. For selfies, there is a 12-megapixel f/1.9 aperture front camera housed in a pill-shaped cut-out at the top center of the display.
The beloved alert slider found in previous generations of iPhones has been replaced by a new action button. The action button is currently available on the Pro models and serves multiple functions. There is a new option for configuring the action button in the settings app, allowing users to perform various functions, such as switching between silent, vibrate, and ring modes, opening the camera app and taking pictures, activating the flashlight, and more. The action button offers two modes: a single press and a long press, both of which are customizable.
Apple’s pricing strategy remains unchanged from last year, with the iPhone 15 Pro starting at $999 for the base 128GB variant, and the 15 Pro Max starting at $1199 for the base 256GB variant. Preorders begin this Friday, with the devices available for sale starting on September 22nd.
