Apple is shifting gears on it’s macOS to support video gaming, aside from being a reliable productivity machine for years. The company has released a new toolkit to help developers port their Windows games to macOS easily.
This was unveiled at the WWDC 2023 event, with support pages and helping guides appearing now. Interested developers can download the beta version of this porting toolkit to check how well their Windows games run on macOS.
Tuning Your Windows Games to macOS
For a long time, Apple’s iMacs and MacBooks have been known chiefly for productive work, while the Windows counterparts are designated for gaming and other works. Apple is changing this opinion by asking game developers to port their Windows games to macOS – with the help of a unique toolkit.
As discussed in the WWDC 2023, this dedicated converter tool will help devs check how well their Windows games run on macOS and other related devices to fine-tune them to the Apple ecosystem. It also has a Metal shader to convert Windows games and their graphics code to work on Macs with Apple silicon.
Apple made a dedicated website and many guide videos to help developers through this process. Interested developers can download the beta version of this toolkit from the Apple Developer website and seed their games to check compatibility. Apple says this new toolkit reduces the porting development time from months to a few days.
This aside, the Cupertino-based company is also tuning it’s AirPods to support PC gaming. Apple claims to have reduced the audio latency for the AirPods by doubling the Bluetooth sampling rate. This works even in popular third-party game controllers, provided that you’re running on the latest hardware.
