Apple has reportedly signed a deal with Shutterstock to license millions of it’s stock images to train it’s AI models.
While the Cupertino-based company doesn’t currently have an AI chatbot like ChatGPT, it may be training any internal AI features for its upcoming software and hardware.
Leveraging Shutterstock Content
Apple is one of the largest tech companies in the world, but has been relatively quiet about it’s involvement in the current AI hype. While it’s rivals are incorporating some form of AI into their products, Apple has been focused on tuning it’s App Store policies, advertising Vision Pro and even firing employees.
Although Apple has not yet revealed any relevant details about it’s AI projects, a new deal with Shutterstock suggests that the company is indeed working on some form of AI. The deal was worth between $25-50 million, reports Reuters and was signed last year after the invention of ChatGPT.
Apple wasn’t the only company to leverage Shutterstock’s repository, but it did too, like Meta, Google, and Amazon last year. Though Apple is still silent on it’s AI bets, the company is hopefully preparing to change this narrative soon with iOS 18, scheduled to arrive at WWDC 2024, on June 10th at 10 AM PT.
