While you’re excited about Apple’s new iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, have you checked their compatibility list yet? These new software ditched some of the older iPhones and iPads, since they lack the required hardware.
If you’re wondering what they’re, here’s the list below;
iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 Compatible List
Two of the major announcements Apple made at WWDC 2023 event are iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, which brought improved designs and a bunch of new features – although some borrowed from Android.
More specifically, iOS 17 knits Phone, Contacts and FaceTime more closely with certain features, like the new stickers created from photos now appear across these apps. Apple added the ability to share contacts with other iPhone users with just a physical tap of their phones(NameDrop) and the AirDrop support via NFC.
Also, the company finally lets you share your AirTags with multiple users and the passengers in a car with Apple’s CarPlay can join the SharePlay experience. All these will be available for the iPhone XS and newer Apple smartphones, plus the 2nd- and 3rd-generation iPhone SE.
This means the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the original iPhone X are dumped from receiving iOS 17. iPadOS 17, on the other hand, drops support for most of the pre-2018 devices, like the 5th Gen iPad and the very first 12.9″ and 9.7″ iPad Pros from 2015 and 2016.
Other than these, the iPad Pros, the third-generation iPad Air and later, and the 5th-generation iPad mini and later will run the new iPadOS 17. Though some of the older models support the new OS, they’re likely to miss the new-age features – which require certain high-end hardware launched in recent times.
If not by models, you can determine the support for iOS 17 by the device’s processor – where Apple needs at least A12 Bionic chip or newer to run iOS 17. In case of iPads, you need the Apple M1 or M2 processors for running iPadOS 17. Well, the 6th Gen iPad with it’s A10 Bionic chip is the sole exception.
With respect to WatchOS 10, Apple states that the Watch Series 4 or newer will receive the WatchOS 10 update, although you need the connected iPhone to be running iOS 17. So if you have an older phone that can’t upgrade, you will miss these features.
