Nearly a decade after it’s launch, Amazon’s Alexa is set to lose it’s robotic voice tone for a more human-like sound. Also, the voice assistant has gained Generative AI support for creative answers.
Amazon noted this change at it’s latest hardware event, unveiling several new devices and refreshing the other smart devices with new features. Amongst them are the updates: Echo Frames smart glasses, Blink security cameras, Eero Wi-Fi extenders, etc.
Generative AI in Alexa
Amazon’s hardware event this week had a lot of announcements. While some are improvements to the existing devices, some are new additions and entirely new devices. One among them is the refinement of Alexa, which can now speak in a human-like tone.
This aside, Amazon has added generative AI capabilities to it’s voice assistant, which can now seem more relevant and creative when answering queries. For example, users can start time for football games and recipe ideas, to which Alexa responds in a natural tone instead of the regular robotic voice.
The voice assistant can also compose and recite poems and can converse without the need for “Hey, Alexa” hotword all the time. These developments came nearly a decade after Amazon launched Alexa, which is still unprofitable.
This aside, Amazon has also announced a $180 Echo Hub, a wall-mounted touchscreen for managing smart devices in the home and a new Alexa app feature to map out internet-connected devices throughout a user’s home for easier control.
Furthermore, there’s a second-generation Echo Frames(Amazon’s smart glasses), a television soundbar, refreshed versions of it’s Blink outdoor security cameras and Eero Wi-Fi extenders. The company has also revamped the children’s Fire tablets and added search capabilities to the FireTV service to find free content.
