Dumping Microsoft WordPad for Good

While we’re expecting Windows 12 later this year, Microsoft may push a significant Windows 11 upgrade instead, adding new features and removing the unnecessary ones. One among them is the WordPad, a note-taking app introduced back in Windows 95.

While it’s fairly useful, Microsoft decided to kill it anyway, and has pushed users to other apps with similar purposes. The company had started dumping WordPad since last year. After 28 years, as noted by Tom’s Hardware this week, Microsoft removed the WordPad app in the latest Canary version of Windows 11.

Microsoft has already stopped bundling WordPad in fresh Windows 11 installs and is now scheduling to remove it in future upgrades. As we have spot this in the latest Windows 11 Canary build, we might see this happening for stable users later this year.

Users accustomed to Microsoft WordPad are advised to try alternatives like Microsoft Word for rich text documents and Windows Notepad for plain text documents. This aside, Microsoft also killed legacy apps like Cortana, Mail, Calendar, Maps, People and Movies & TV in the latest Windows 11 versions.
