Meta is Working on a Themed Icon for Its Social Media Apps

Meta Themed Icons

Meta is currently developing themed icons for it’s social media apps on the Android platform. The Themed icon was introduced with Android 12 and this feature was initially supported only by Google and system apps. However, as Android 14 was introduced, many third-party apps began to support themed icons, enhancing the customization options available to users.

Themed icons are a customization feature on Android that enables apps to display their icons using the colour palette derived from the colours of the device’s home screen wallpaper. This functionality was initially introduced on Android 12, with limited support from Google and system apps. As a result of subsequent developments, numerous third-party apps now offer support for themed icons, contributing to a more cohesive and uniform home screen look.

Meta, the company that owns the world’s most widely used social media platform, is actively working on implementing themed icons for it’s suite of social media apps, which includes Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger.

Instagram was spotted with a themed icon with the alpha version 307.0.0.0.30. Facebook was also spotted with themed icon support in it’s alpha version 439.0.0.0.30.

Mishal Rehman was the first to draw attention to the themed icon support for Meta apps on his X account and many other users have reported the same support for Meta-owned apps across various social media platforms.

Furthermore, 9to5google discovered themed icon support for Facebook Messenger in its alpha version 433.0.0.0.8. It is worth noting that some users identified the Facebook Messenger-themed icon in the beta version but this is only sometimes available to Android 13 or 14 users.

For those who don’t have access to these alpha versions, they won’t find them on the Play Store like the typical beta versions. Alpha releases serve as testing phases, with Facebook releasing the alpha version to a select group of members for testing upcoming features. Once an app is thoroughly tested in it’s alpha version, it is made available to a broader group of beta testers and users can download the beta versions directly from the Play Store.

However, users interested in accessing the alpha versions of these apps can download them from trusted third-party sources and sideload the apps to explore upcoming features.

It is important to note that these three apps are not the first Meta-owned apps to introduce themed icon support. The Threads app, also owned by Meta, recently introduced themed icon support for it’s stable Android version.
