Google, at it’s India event this week, announced the ability to book metro tickets via it’s Maps app for Indian users, supported through the Open Network for Digital Commerce partnership.
The feature will be rolling out to Maps in the coming months in all metro cities, allowing users to buy metro tickets via buyer apps available on ONDC. Meta’s popular IM WhatsApp already offers this service, including booking and payment on its platform.
Booking Metro Tickets on Google Maps
Google Maps is one of the best navigation apps in the wild, offering a wide range of information to help people reach their destinations better. Now, the platform is adding a new functionality to ease metro rail users in India – by letting them book metro tickets on Google Maps.
This move was announced by Google Cloud India managing director Bikram Singh Bedi at the Google for India event on Thursday. The new support is possible with Google’s partnership with Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), letting users book metro tickets via buyer apps integrated within the open network.
The feature will be rolling out to Indian users in the coming months in all metro cities. While you can already pay for metro tickets via the Google Pay app, the platform doesn’t offer a booking facility yet. So integrating this functionality with Google Maps makes more sense as people look for navigation there.
WhatsApp also recently introduced metro ticket bookings on it’s platform in Delhi and Bengaluru, but that includes complete end-to-end booking and payment service. In Google Maps’ case, the app outsources booking to buyer apps and handles the payment.
This aside, Google also announced new lending offers to local users and merchants via Google Pay and other generative AI features in it’s products. Also, the company said it’ll start manufacturing Pixel phones in India, starting with the Pixel 8 Series.
