WhatsApp is Finally Making a Dedicated iPad App

WhatsApp is Working on a Chat-Level Authentication System

Nearly a decade after it’s acquisition, Meta has finally cared enough to make a reliable WhatsApp app for iPad that works without needing an internet connection for it’s primary device.

WhatsApp users on TestFlight can download the new iPad app for testing, although it’s incomplete with some features. Though Meta promised to add them and sort out any known bugs soon, this development is too late.

A Dedicated WhatsApp App for iPad

Years after begging for a dedicated app, Meta is finally working on making a reliable WhatsApp for iPad that doesn’t need the linked iPhone(or any other primary device) to be internet-connected all the time.

All these years, WhatsApp users on iPad have been forced to use the platform only through the web and often fail to sync the chats on time. This is a massive hassle to those who continue chats from iPads after starting them on iPhones.

Well, listening to the community’s cries, Meta is finally making a dedicated WhatsApp app for iPad, as noted by WaBetaInfo. People on WhatsApp TestFlight can test the new iPad app, which is built with Mac Catalyst. Go to the Settings option on your iOS WhatsApp app, navigate to Linked Devices and select “Link a device”. After scanning the QR code and linking your iOS device, you can use WhatsApp without needing your phone to be connected to the internet.

Though it’s good to see a dedicated app for the iPad finally, it still has some areas to improve on. For instance, users can’t view or post statuses on the new iPad app, but Meta promised to add them soon and address any other issues.

This aside, Meta’s WhatsApp has been tagged as a gatekeeper of the instant messenger industry by the EU under it’s newly formed Digital Markets Act. To break it’s status, the Union forces apps like WhatsApp to enable chat interoperability – to let users from other chat apps communicate with WhatsApp users.

Though WhatsApp has six months to comply, the platform was seen working on this feature already, with the latest Android beta version showcasing a dedicated Third-party Chats section. While WhatsApp is yet to announce this officially, hints of such are good to learn about.
