The US FAA has just approved UPS to fly it’s drones beyond the line of sight, letting the company deliver goods to distant places.
This is a significant breakthrough for UPS, as the company can only fly it’s delivery drones with someone’s guidance on the ground, within their eyesight. UPS has been delivering medicines via drones for years, but only to specific locations till now. The FAA clearance will allow it to provide goods to distant areas.
Clearance to UPS Drone Deliveries
UPS, the delivery giant, has been cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration for farther drone deliveries beyond eyesight. This comes years after UPS has been delivering items via drones but with strict human guidance and in eyesight range.
The company had to set someone on the ground to keep the visual track of the machine as it flew through the sky to ensure safe travel. Thus, the latest FAA clearance is a breakthrough for the company, letting it deliver beyond eyesight.
Talking about this advancement, Andreas Raptopoulos, CEO of Matternet, the company that supplies the M2 quadcopters to UPS for deliveries, said the FAA’s approval “will play a significant role in the scaling of drone delivery services throughout the United States. This is another step in our journey to make drone delivery a common part of everyday life”.
Earlier, UPS used Matternet’s drones to deliver medicines for people in certain areas during the COVID-19 pandemic, where the service was useful. So, the FAA clearance will let UPS serve more people across various items.
This comes a few weeks after Wing partnered with Walmart for drone deliveries in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which can travel up to six miles from the store and deliver quick meals, groceries, household essentials, and over-the-counter medicines within 30 minutes.
