Samsung May Add a Satellite-Based SOS Feature for the Galaxy S24 Series

One UI 6.0

After missing in it’s recent flagships, Samsung is expected to add a satellite-based SOS feature in it’s upcoming Galaxy S24 Series, according to a local Korean news outlet.

This claim is based on the Korean Science and ICT minister, who said the local smartphone brands may start a communication service between 5G phones and satellites soon and with Samsung being the primary local brand, we expect this feature to be debuted in the upcoming flagship series earlier next year.

Satellite SOS Feature for the Galaxy S24 Series

Apple’s satellite-based SOS feature is one of the notable specs for the iPhone 14 Series. This feature helped a handful of people and allowed for great advertising for the latest iPhone handsets. This led other OEMs to make a similar feature too but there’s none available in the Android community yet!

Though we expected Samsung to add this support to it’s latest foldable, the company missed it. Well, Samsung has already noted the satellite connectivity ecosystem isn’t mature yet and shall wait a bit longer to add related features. The company already works with Iridium Communications, which has a low-earth orbit satellite constellation for emergency communications.

And we may soon see this partnership working for the Galaxy S24 Series when Samsung debuts a satellite-based SOS feature similar to Apple’s. This hope is based on the recent saying from South Korea’s Minister of Science and ICT in South Korea, Lee Jong-ho, who, in an interview with Yonhap News, said;

“I cannot say for sure, but I know that the domestic industry is considering commercializing the service next year, expecting that a standard related to satellite communication will be prepared next year.”

And with LG shutting down it’s smartphone business recently, we can safely assume that Samsung is the only major smartphone brand that can make this possible. The company’s next-gen flagship handset – Galaxy S24 Series, is set to arrive in Q1 of 2024 and a satellite-based SOS feature may be added, stay tune for more details.
