Zoom Decides to Ask User Consent For Training its AI Tools

Following a backlash from the community, Zoom is amending it’s terms to seek users’ consent before using their data for training it’s AI products.

This comes months after the video conferencing platform revised it’s terms to have extensive control over users’ content and use it for training it’s AI tools. Since many use Zoom for private calls, they accused the company of being a privacy invader, as there’s no opt-out policy from the terms.

After having a great run during the COVID-19 period, Zoom is now hit by regular working means(working from the office) – which pushes the company to find new ways to survive in the market. One among them is jumping into the AI craze by adding related tools to the platform.

In this pursuit, Zoom added experimental AI tools like IQ Meeting Summary(ML-powered summarizations) and IQ Team Chat Compose(AI-powered message drafting) recently. Though helpful, they stirred the community as Zoom uses consumer data to train these products!

As noted by StackDairy, Zoom amended it’s terms in March to let itself have rather extensive control over consumer data, to be used for training it’s AI. The updated terms offers Zoom the right to “redistribute, publish, import, access, use, store, transmit, review, disclose, preserve, extract, modify, reproduce, share, use, display, copy, distribute, translate, transcribe, create derivative works, and process Customer Content and to perform all acts with respect to the Customer Content”.

Since it’s intriguing, many have accused the company of privacy-invasive policies on various social media platforms. In response to this, Zoom noted in a fresh blog post that it further amended the terms to seek prior consent from users before using their data for training it’s AI products.

Assuring that the data shared won’t be used to train third-party services, Zoom’s Chief Product Officer, Smita Hashim, said the data transmitted will be “used solely to improve the performance and accuracy of these AI services”.
