Instagram to Let Users Know AI-Generated Content With Labels

Instagram to Soon Verify Your Age in Weird Methods

Instagram is reportedly working on adding labels to content made up of AI. These labels are aimed at informing people on the platform before they make any decisions based on it.

While there’s no news on when we can see this, Meta would hopefully add these labels soon, considering the growth of AI and it’s side effects. Moreover, Instagram is also working on AI tools for Story editing and a summarising feature for long messages in DM.

Identifying AI Content on Instagram

While it’s evident that Meta is working on some AI tools for it’s social media platforms, the company is also working to help people identify AI-generated content – to let them make informed decisions. In this pursuit, Instagram was seen working on adding labels to content that’s made or edited with AI tools.

This was noted by Alessandro Paluzzi, a renowned tipster, who shared screenshots of these new labels. An in-app message showing the labels on AI-generated content read, “The creator or Meta said that this content was created or edited with AI,” while an additional label note the post is “generated by Meta AI”.

This measure comes after several researchers and policymakers have raised concerns about how AI can be used to spread misinformation more convincingly than the current technology. Thus, Meta and six other big tech companies pledged last week to adopt a series of AI safety measures, like watermarks for AI-generated content, to inform people.

While Meta hasn’t mentioned it’s consumer-facing AI tools yet, it dropped hints several times. Some of them came from the CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who said in a quarterly earnings call last week, “You can imagine lots of ways AI could help people connect and express themselves in our apps: creative tools that make it easier and more fun to share content, agents that act as assistants, coaches, or that can help you interact with businesses and creators, and more”.

Besides these labels, Paluzzi has also spotted signs of other AI tools on Instagram, like a “message summary” feature for summarising long texts in DMs and new artistic tools for editing Stories. There’s no timeline for when these could be available to the general public.
