Arrested for Selling PII
One of the many darknet websites for transacting sensitive data – SSNDOB marketplace, was shut down mid-last year. That was months after arresting the marketplace’s admin, Vitalii Chychasov, a Ukrainian man, who pleaded guilty in the US this week.
He admitted to, committing access to device fraud and trafficking in unauthorised access devices through his illegal Marketplace, which processed transactions of sensitive personal information of people in the United States, like their full names, dates of birth and Social Security Numbers(SSNs).
An investigation by US law enforcement revealed the PII transactions earned the site revenue of over $19,000,000, making it lucrative yet a severe crime. Chychasov is also forced to hand over the domains “blackjob.biz“, “ssndob.club” and “ssndob.vip“, as they’re linked to his illegal job.
A second admin of SSNDOB, Sergey Pugach, was also arrested in May 2022, but a punishment sentence is yet to be determined. Both admins have placed their website servers strategically in selected locations across the globe while accepting payments only in hard-to-trace cryptocurrencies to avoid detection.
Chychasov now faces a maximum imprisonment penalty of 15 years while also forfeiting an amount of $5,000,000.
