WhatsApp Users Can Soon Send Short Video Clips in Chats

WhatsApp 'Chat Lock' is Coming Soon, Confirms Mark Zuckerberg

WhatsApp is pushing a Snapchat-like feature of supporting the sharing of a 60-second video clip in chats.

Though it’s not a one-time media like View Once photos, WhatsApp restricts users from sharing this 60-second video with others and they’re end-to-end encrypted. This feature is now available for beta testers and may take a while to appear in the stable channel.

Short Video Clip in WhatsApp Chats

Though WhatsApp lacks several features that it’s rivals have, it’s gradually catching up to their pace. The platform has brought in Communities, broadcasting channels, polls in groups etc., lately and now experimenting with a short video message feature.

As we have on Snapchat, WhatsApp is testing support for sharing a 60-second video in conversations that will be private to only the participants in the chat. This feature was spotted in WhatsApp Android beta v2.23.8.19 and iOS beta v23.6.0.73.

It’s cooked into the voice message button at the bottom right – where tapping the microphone button will send a voice message, but tapping it again will turn the icon into a video camera option. You can press and hold the button to record a quick video clip and release it to send it.

Once done, you can tap on the microphone again to switch back to the voice message mode. WhatsApp has set a 60-second limit for this feature, similar to that of Snapchat or Telegram. While we have View Once photo as a short media feature already, this video support helps users to express more of something that they can’t do with just static images.

And these videos are end-to-end encrypted, respecting the user’s privacy. While they’re not similar to view-once media, the recipient is blocked from forwarding your videos to others.
