Tor Project and Mullvad VPN Teams Invented a New Web Browser

Engineers at the Tor Project and Mullvad VPN have invented a new privacy-focused web browser – named Mullvad Browser.

Available for all the major OS platforms and as a browser extension on Firefox, Mullvad Browser makes the data collection practice hard by making all the users look alike – thus preventing behavioural tracking of an individual or grouped users. This also means the strength of the browser is determined by the number of people using it.

A New Privacy-Focused Web Browser

Over the last decade, the number of browsers designed to reduce the web tracking of users has increased rapidly – to where we have tens of options today. Adding to the top of this list is a new one – Mullvad Browser – coming from the teams of Tor Project and Mullvad VPN.

Calling today’s mass surveillance absurd, Mullvad VPN’s CEO, Jan Jonsson said the objective of this new browser is to make it harder for those who wanted to collect your data. Hoping to minimise the data tracking, Mullvad Browser works on the same principle as Tor Browser.

It makes the trackers look at all persons as the same – thus one ad for all – if there is anything of such and since Tor relies on more people for better privacy, Mullvad Browser too has the same need. More people using the browser means more layers of security – thus making it hard for tracking one specific user.

Talking about this development, Tor Project’s executive director, Isabela Fernandes said;

“Developing this browser with Mullvad is about providing people with more privacy options for everyday browsing and challenging the current business model of exploiting people’s behavioural data.”

Since coming from a big house, Mullvad Browser will now compete with DuckDuckGo and Brave in the privacy-focused web browser field. Well, DuckDuckGo and Brave are having millions of users already, since started earlier, with the former even having tools for stripping down the email trackers.
